Ryu Soo-young cast as middle brother in new weekend drama
Seo In-gook has a new hyung: Ryu Soo-young has been cast in the upcoming dramaRascal Sons as the second brother of three sons, where Seo plays the maknae. Huh. You’d think he’d gotten his fill of being the middle bro in a weekend family show after 58 episodes of Ojakkyo Brothers… but hey, who’s to say you can’t keep doing what you’re good at?
At least it’ll be a different type of character for Ryu, who’s gotten used to playing urbane professionals; he was the charming history professor in My Princess and the rising newscaster in Ojakkyo. In this drama, he’s taking on the role of a early-thirtysomething martial-arts-fantasy novelist with a creative soul and a free spirit. He doesn’t care about what others thing of him, which sometimes translates into offbeat behavior and an unrealistic perspective. Cute. I so much prefer Ryu being light-hearted and charming over brooding and angsty.
He also falls in love with his friend’s girlfriend, which, uh-oh. The friend will be played byKim Young-hoon, who had a brief but notable role in Gaksital as the comrade who goes after Kang-to in the Angel Club disguised as a waiter, [SPOILER?] who then sacrifices himself to save the hero’s life. Aw. Already I feel bad for him; doesn’t giving up your life for your nation merit some happiness in your next (drama) life?
Being a weekend family show means it’ll come with the usual large family at its center, lots of side characters and multiple storylines. We can expect marriage and family ties to figure largely in any show of this kind, but even so it seems this drama will have a particular emphasis on “examining the meaning of marriage and divorce.”
Rascal Sons is directed by Kim Kyung-hee of Gloria and written by Kim Ji-soo of Scarlet Letter. The drama replaces God of War on MBC weekends, and will premiere in mid-September.
